There he goes. One of God’s superhumans; never considered for mass production. Too weird to live. Too rare to die.
– Dr. Hunter S. Thompson
What makes a man? Is it the penis? Or is it the ability to shape the world that he inhabits. The universally accepted ideal of the perfect gentlemen is nothing more than ode to the supercharged aspirations of an extinct society. Bygone are the warrior and the warrior society. This is the era of the thug and the terrorist. This is the time for men that fight without honor. The monk is a relic of a sweetly spoiled, rotted and ruined world. Today’s common man has morals that are easily corrupted by the pleasures of the modern world. If a man is defined by his place in the world, whether he is rich or poor, or single or attached, he is nothing without that connection. With so many different opinions on what constitutes manhood, it is of no surprise that we live in an age where few great men exist.
I come from a place and time where manhood is defined by the number of women you bed, not the quality of the woman you cherish. I come from a place and time, where aggression, ruthless and unwarranted aggression even, are championed as prime examples of manhood. In my era, the thug and the terrorist are the only men that will the world to kneel before them. Maybe this isn’t a unique time. Men have always desired to evoke fear or admiration or respect from the people they make acquaintance. Men should want to be feared. They should garner respect. But there is more to manhood than being feared and respected.
As a child, I sensed there was an importance to being a man in the world today. I noticed my friends that had a father figure types at home had totally different personalities than my friends and classmates that were raised by single mothers. If nothing more than there being a second income in the home, there was an obvious difference in the lifestyles of these two categories of friends. I’d barely began school when my parents split, and I feared the limitations of growing in a single mother household were now a reality. I was the man of the house, but I didn’t know what a man was to be.
When you live in a home where life lessons are slim and you are your own disciplinarian, the trek you take is the journey you make. Life will always be as hard or as simple as you decide it to be. People don’t make mistakes. People make decisions. This collection is a testament to my journey, full of the right and wrong decisions I’ve made trying to be the man I want to be tomorrow. I may be more of a renaissance man, than a great man, but if I am to become the man I am destined to be, it will be under the tutelage of no one else. This book is a collection of stories from my childhood through my ascension into manhood. May my successes and failure provide a useful morsel or lesson that you can use in your journey to be all that you are capable of becoming.

Master the money like you mastered your manhood. Handle your women like you handle the world. Balance the fantasies of masculinity with the reality of marriage and monogamy. Don’t forget to indulge. Be a gangster and a gentlemen.
So you think you made it? This is America baby. You ain’t made it til you bottomed out and rose back up again. As soon as you get it, they gonna wanna take it. And you already know it ain’t nothing you can do about it. Spend now, save later. Tomorrow isn’t promised. Tonight we toast to the gods. That’s right, get down. Cope. Dope. Jack Daniels on the rocks.
You went from honor roll to top of your legal class. Soon they might be calling you your honor. Before you go Uncle Phil on em, you gotta rep for them. Let em know where you from. Go back to that elementary school where the halls were just as crowded as the classrooms because it wasn’t nobody learning. Go back to that house with no heat, running to the oven to stay warm. Tell em how to go from a baller in training to a baller on a budget. It won’t be long before you big balling.
I know you thinking the game was better sold, but this one’s on the house.
